Carrie Kincaid, B.S. Food Science, 2001
Associate Scientist II, Kraft Foods

I absolutely love my job!  I'm doing exactly what I wanted to do when I picked Food Science as my major. I am currently working in a division of the company called Snacking Growth, so I actually get to create the formulas and processing methods for brand new food products. My job is challenging and fun, and it allows me to be very creative.  There is no better rush than seeing a new product that you helped develop in the grocery store or being awarded a patent for a food innovation!

With the strong quality control background I gained as a Food Science major, I could pursue a variety of opportunities at Kraft, such as joining:

§       the quality team, which ensures that all foods are manufactured in a safe way and that all of our products are of the highest quality

§       the operations division, which would allow me to work closely with plants and coordinate the logistics and engineering behind the production of food

§       the basic science division of the company, which focuses on things such as gas chromatography, density measurement, and measurement of fat, salt, and other key parameters in foods

§       the packaging division of the company, where I would create innovative packages that improve the quality of products as well as the appeal to consumers

§       the productivity part of the company, which continuously works to reduce the cost of products while maintaining Kraft's high standards for quality

§       the sensory part of the company, where I would continuously evaluate new and existing products in order to provide feedback to product developers

§       the part of the company that's dedicated to research, which would allow me to focus on anything from nutraceuticals to customized vending machines

With all of these positions, I could easily take on a management role in addition to technical work.

Advice to those considering a food science degree: A degree in food science opens the door to a wide array of jobs in the food industry, and the food industry itself is very stable, friendly to work in, and important to all consumers.
